Sacred Journey Goals

The 16th edition of the Sacred Journey in May, 2024 pays tribute to a ritual and tradition rescued after hundreds of years of not being carried out, where the ancient inhabitants of the region made a pilgrimage by sea to pay tribute to the goddess Ixchel and receive a message for their people. Among the goals of the Sacred Journey that Xcaret rescues outstand:
Preserve an ancestral tradition. This ritual recreates an offering to Ixchel, the goddess associated with the moon and fertility. It was performed by the ancient settlers of this area of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Contribute to the consolidation of a cultural offer in Cancun and Riviera Maya. Strengthen the original culture of the region, promote sustainable tourism development, and spread one of the most relevant events in the Playa del Carmen area.
Be a vehicle to learn about the traditions of the former inhabitants and create interest among new audiences.
Invite the community to be proud of the region’s ancient culture, preserving it from the intense migratory flow in the region.

Spell to Heaven

The settlement of Polé grew and became essential between the years 1000 and 1550 A.D., and it benefited mainly from marine resources and an important coastal trade route that reached Honduras.
Rancho Ina has been proposed as part of the Ceremonial Center of Polé (Xcaret); the site's works reveal ceramic material that dates the complex to the Late Postclassic (1300 - 1450 A.D.). Many censer fragments have been found there, indicating that it was a place of worship.
It calls attention to La Casa Azul, with a splendid postclassic mural of the region, where blue predominates with grays, whites, and others. The mural is delineated in black and centers on water, fertility, life, rebirth, and the eternal movement of the cosmos. It is possible that the architectural complex was still in use long after the conquest.
The sanctuary gives rise to the creation of the artistic passage Conjuro al Cielo (Spell to Heaven). The people of Polé prepare to conjure the heavens that sustain their ancient pahuantunes, give their offerings, offer their dances, and see their canoeists depart for the island of Cozumel in search of the venies of the deities of the rain and the moon.
